Basseterre, St. Kitts

Logbook 1/20/07
Weather report from yesterday predicted 6 foot seas with a 9 second interval. Those are good compared to what we have seen on this trip. Departed first light from Virgin Gorda, bound for St. Martin 73 miles away. By the time we got ½ way across, seas had built to 9-10 feet on our bow (so much for forecasts). Changed course for Saba to quarter the seas. Got a better ride but we didn’t get to see St. Martin & St. Barts. Saba looks like a fairy tale picture of a forbidden land. A mere 5 square miles, it reaches a lofty 3084 feet on Mt. Scenery. No beaches & steep cliffs make it almost inaccessible. At Ladder Bay, some 800 steps are cut into the rock to provide access. This is the island that our King George friend, H2O Joe shipwrecked on many years ago. Wanted to go ashore & explore the old Dutch & Scottish buildings but the moorings were too rough with the direction of seas. Decided to push on to St. Kitts. Went scuba diving there for 10 days with John about 16 years ago. The port area has really changed with the construction of Port Zante. A marina & cruise ship dock have changed the waterfront. Basseterre, the capitol is the site of the original French settlement in St. Kitts. It has some beautiful 18th century French & English architecture in the old town area.
Fair weather & following seas,
