Tibes Pre-Taino Indian village

Logbook 1/14/07
Drove into the hills North of Ponce to visit the Tibes Indian Ceremonial Center. Discovered in 1975 by a local farmer after being uncovered by hurricane Eloise, this site is the oldest Indian ceremonial complex in Puerto Rico. Three plazas, 9 ball courts, countless artifacts and an ancient cemetary with 186 human skeletons were discovered on this site. The first inhabitants were Igneri indians from Venezuela (25 BC to 600 AD). The followind Pre-Taino culture are the ones who built the stone structures. The later Arawak & Caribe indians had no remaining traces in Puerto Rico within a few decades of Columbus' arrival.
Still looks like Wednesday is our best bet for a smooth cruise to the BVI or St. Martin.
