Hurricane Dean hits St. Lucia

Weather.com 8/17/2007 report at 7:46AM

Hurricane Dean, the first hurricane in the Atlantic this season, is moving quickly west through the Lesser Antilles this morning.

The center of the hurricane is passing between or near the islands of St. Lucia and Martinique. Given this track, both islands will experience the worse conditions associated with the eye wall.

Dean has top sustained winds of 100 mph; a category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Some additional strengthening is possible today, especially as Dean moves west of the Antilles.

The Weather Channel played a report from Castries, St. Lucia saying the harbour flooded the streets in the capital and boats were driven up into the streets. Sounds bad!

Got a call through to our friend, Bruce Hackshaw’s cellphone. He lives on the hill above Rodney Bay and watched conditions all morning. He indicated the boat was fine & still upright on the jack stands in the boatyard. The surge in the lagoon did not get high enough to damage the house. Great news! We later got a call from our agent confirming the boat & house were inspected & all is well.I believe the narrow Lagoon inlet prevented the wind driven waves from building up and causing the flooding that happened in Castries. The claim that Rodney Bay Lagoon was a “Hurricane Hole” had never been tested.
