11/1/06-11/4/06 The beginning

Logbook 11/1/06
Departed White Point Marina in Kinsale, Virginia around noon. Had 2 bald eagles bid us goodbye near the mouth of the Potomac River. It was one of those days on the Chesapeake Bay you dream about. Clear skies. No wind, and calm seas to run down the Bay. Made Hampton Roads before sunset & was greeted by The “Pride of Baltimore II” near the Norfolk Naval Air Station. Ran after dark up the Elizabeth River to Deep Creek lock, the start of the Dismal Swamp Canal.
George Washington surveyed this canal in 1763 and was a major landowner in the swamp. The canal is a 21.6 mile land cut that links the Albemarle Sound and Chesapeake Bay. Construction began in 1793 and was a precursor to today’s Intracoastal Waterway. The water is the color of black coffee due to the high concentration of tannic acid from Cypress and Juniper trees along the banks.
At 8:30 AM we will go thru the lock and begin our trip down “the ditch”.

Hullabaloo was the first boat to enter the lock at Deep Creek, Virginia. Had a nice day on the canal and an uneventful trip to Elizabeth City, NC. Weather report was worsening so we decided to push on to the Albemarle Sound while conditions were good. Ran up the Sound to the Yeopim River and arrived at Albemarle Plantation Marina to anchor just after dark. Mike & Wendy McArtor have property there and will drive down to meet us tomorrow.

Woke up to temperatures in the 40’s. Mike & Wendy arrived around 4 PM to Albemarle Plantation. Got the grand tour & saw their lot. Really a well done development. Had dinner in the clubhouse to celebrate Wendy’s birthday.

Awoke to ice on the deck. We need to head south! Ran back down the Albemarle Sound to the Alligator River. Then the Alligator-Pungo Canal to Belhaven. Crossed the Pamlico River to Goose Creek, past Hobucken, NC to the Pamlico Sound. Up the Neuse River to New Bern, NC. Stayed at the Sheraton Grand Marina & plugged in to shore power to crank up the heat.
